Invisalign or fixed braces: questions to help you decide

Clear aligners and fixed braces have different practical demands. Your bite and an orthodontic assessment should guide the choice.

Updated 21 October 2026

Start with the treatment goal

Ask which tooth movements are needed and whether each option can address them. Invisalign is a clear-aligner brand, not a guarantee that every bite problem can be treated in the same way. Your clinician should explain the reasons for the recommendation.

Compare the daily routine

Clear aligners are removable and need to be worn and cared for as instructed. Fixed braces remain on the teeth and need careful cleaning around brackets and wires. Ask how meals, sport, work or school would fit each approach.

Discuss limits and risks

Both approaches need healthy teeth and gums and ongoing professional review. Orthodontic risks can include root shortening, gum changes and teeth moving after treatment. Ask how the risks relate to your own mouth.

Plan maintenance from the beginning

Retainers are part of maintaining the result. Discuss the likely retainer type, wear instructions and what happens if it is lost or damaged. Do not choose an appliance on a promise of a faster result without understanding the proposed plan.

Questions to bring to your visit

  • Why does this option suit my bite?
  • What daily wear and cleaning will it require?
  • What will retention involve?
