Feeling nervous about the dentist? Start with a conversation

You do not need to hide dental anxiety. Explaining what worries you can help the team discuss support and a manageable next step.

Updated 21 October 2026

Tell us before the appointment

A difficult past experience, fear of injections, uncertainty or embarrassment can all affect how a visit feels. You can begin by telling reception that you are anxious and would like the clinician to know. You do not need to justify the feeling.

Agree how to communicate

Ask for an explanation before each step and discuss a signal to pause. Talk about whether you prefer more detail, less detail or breaks. Your clinician can discuss what is practical for the care you need.

Discuss the support that suits you

Dental anxiety management can involve communication, behavioural approaches and, for selected patients, additional support or sedation assessment. Suitability depends on the individual. Do not assume a particular technique is available or appropriate without discussing it.

Make the first goal realistic

Bring a short list of concerns and ask what the first visit will involve. A useful outcome may be understanding your oral health and agreeing the next appointment. If pain or swelling is present, tell the team promptly rather than postponing the conversation.

Questions to bring to your visit

  • Can we agree a pause signal?
  • What will happen at the first visit?
  • What support could suit my needs?
