Why regular dental reviews matter

A review can help you understand changes in your mouth before they become more difficult to manage. It is also a chance to get advice you can use.

Updated 21 October 2026

Findings can come before discomfort

Early tooth decay may cause no symptoms. Gum changes can also be easy to overlook. An examination helps identify concerns, but a routine appointment should never be treated as a guarantee that no future problem can occur.

Use the conversation

Ask the clinician to explain what they found and show you any area needing extra care. A practical demonstration, a clear next step and a chance to ask questions can be as useful as remembering a list of treatment names.

Agree a schedule for you

NHS guidance supports recall based on oral health and risk. Ask when to return and why. A review, a cleaning appointment and a treatment visit are not automatically the same thing.

Contact the team between reviews

Tell us about new pain, swelling, damage or a persistent mouth change rather than waiting for a reminder. Keep your current contact details with reception and let the team know if you are changing clinics so continuity can be discussed.

Questions to bring to your visit

  • What did this review show?
  • What should I change at home?
  • When should I return, and what would mean calling sooner?

Let’s talk about your question
