DENTAL ADVICE · SMILE BY DR NOURA
Halloween treats, happy teeth
A little planning can help your family enjoy the fun without letting the sweet stash take over the week. Here is a calmer approach for families in Dubai.
Make a plan before the party
Decide together when treats will be enjoyed, rather than leaving a bowl within reach all day. Frequent sugary snacks repeatedly expose teeth to decay-causing conditions. Keep sweets to a small, planned occasion with a meal, and offer water between meals.
Choose treats thoughtfully
Plain chocolate
Usually clears from teeth more readily than sticky sweets. Keep the portion small.
Sticky or long-lasting sweets
Gummies, chewy sweets and hard candies can stay against teeth longer. Choose alternatives.
Sour sweets
Acidity adds another concern for enamel. A “sugar-free” label does not necessarily mean acid-free.
Keep the bedtime routine
Brush with fluoride toothpaste twice daily, including before bed. Help younger children and supervise brushing. Use a smear under three and a pea-sized amount from three to six; ask us which toothpaste strength suits your child. Encourage spitting rather than rinsing.
Make the celebration about more than sweets
Costumes, games, stickers and colouring activities can be the memorable part of the evening. Let children choose a few favourite treats, then put the remainder away. Choose party items suitable for the children’s ages.
A simple family checklist
- Agree a small treat portion and a time to enjoy it.
- Keep water available and avoid grazing on sweets.
- Make room for games and non-food party favours.
- Keep brushing part of the evening, even after a late party.
