Preventive dentistry for children: a parent’s guide
Early visits help families ask questions and make dental care familiar. Prevention and treatment work together; one does not guarantee the other will never be needed.

Make the first visits familiar
Start dental visits when the first milk teeth appear. Let your child come with you where appropriate, and keep explanations simple and positive. Tell the team about communication, sensory or medical needs before the appointment.
Support the home routine
Begin brushing when the first tooth arrives. Young children need an adult’s help, with supervision continuing until at least seven. Ask for a demonstration if you are unsure how to reach the back teeth.
Ask about extra prevention
Fluoride varnish and fissure sealants may be discussed according to age and decay risk. They do not replace daily care, and not every child needs the same approach. Ask what is being recommended and how it will be reviewed.
Bring questions about development
Mention pain, eating difficulties, an injury or concerns about erupting teeth. A child’s visit can also help identify questions about the bite that need assessment. Avoid promising that a check-up will always be quick or that nothing will happen; let the team explain the steps.
Questions to bring to your visit
- Can you show us how to brush the difficult areas?
- Would my child benefit from varnish or sealants?
- When should the next review be?
