Dental check-ups: what happens and how often to go

A routine review is a chance to check your mouth and discuss changes, even when you are not in pain. The timing should suit your needs.

Updated 21 October 2026

What is usually discussed

Your dentist examines your teeth, gums and mouth and asks about symptoms, general health and everyday care. Bring an up-to-date medicines list and mention anything that has changed since the previous appointment.

There is no six-month rule for everyone

The NHS advises that recall intervals depend on oral health and future risk. Ask why your recommended interval suits you and whether a separate treatment or gum-care visit is needed sooner.

An examination is not the same as a cleaning

Ask what has been booked and what it includes. A dentist may recommend further assessment or treatment based on the findings. An X-ray or cleaning should have a reason explained to you.

Do not wait for the reminder if something changes

Decay may have no symptoms initially. New pain, damage, a persistent sore area or a gum change deserves a conversation rather than waiting for a routine date. When booking, say if you have symptoms so reception can direct your enquiry appropriately.

Questions to bring to your visit

  • What has changed since my last visit?
  • Why is this recall interval recommended?
  • Are any separate appointments needed?
