Braces and clear aligners: planning orthodontic treatment
An orthodontic consultation looks at your bite, dental health and goals before recommending an appliance. Treatment can be considered for adults as well as younger patients.

What an assessment considers
Crowding, spacing and the way the teeth meet may all be part of the discussion. The clinician may recommend photographs, scans or X-rays when needed. For children, growth and tooth development help determine the right timing; an assessment does not always mean immediate treatment.
Choosing an approach
Fixed braces and removable clear aligners work in different ways. Ask which can address your particular bite, what daily cooperation is needed and how appointments fit your routine. Appearance is one part of the decision.
Understand the risks and responsibilities
Healthy teeth and gums are important before treatment. Discuss decay, gum changes, root shortening and tooth movement afterwards. Cleaning, attendance and following appliance instructions are part of the plan.
Think beyond the final appointment
Retainers help maintain tooth positions after active treatment. Ask which type is proposed, how to wear and clean it, and who to contact if it breaks. Treatment length and results vary; your assessment should set realistic expectations.
Questions to bring to your visit
- Why does this appliance suit my bite?
- What happens if appointments are missed?
